Laparoscopic Surgery

What is Laparoscopic Surgery?

Laparoscopic Surgery is a minimally invasive surgical technique that allows surgeons to operate in the abdomen and pelvis (and other areas of the body) through very small incisions.  Surgeons hold a camera through one of these incisions and operate manually using special laparoscopic instruments through one or more tiny incisions. Other names for this type of surgery include "keyhole surgery" and straight-stick surgery.

Why have laparoscopic surgery?

Because the instruments work through tiny incisions, as opposed to one or more large incisions, there is less bleeding, a lower risk of infection, less pain, faster recovery and more aesthetic healing of incisions. The vast majority of patients go home the same day.  I perform robotic surgery as well, which also uses tiny incisions.  The benefits of laparoscopic surgery are similar to those of robotic surgery.
