Robotic Surgery
What is Robotic Surgery?
Robotic Surgery is a type of minimally invasive surgery whereby specialized arms are mounted onto a robotic device. These arms are inserted into the body through very small incisions in the abdomen and are controlled by the surgeon who is sitting on a control console. The surgeon can use multiple arms to perform surgery using highly refined and precise movements. A single arm holds a three dimensional high definition camera with superior optics.
I utilize the latest generation robotic surgical system, the da Vinci® Xi.
Why have robotic surgery?
Because the instruments work through tiny incisions, as opposed to one or more large incisions, there is less bleeding, a lower risk of infection, less pain, faster recovery and more aesthetic healing of incisions. The vast majority of my patients go home the same day. I perform laparoscopic surgery as well, which also uses tiny incisions. I may choose to use the robot for a number of reasons, including incredibly large fibroid removal, among other reasons. The benefits of robotic surgery are similar to those of laparoscopic surgery.
